When hundreds
of records managers gather at the ARMA conference
in Orlando - October 15-18 - they’ll be
searching for quality and best price. Many are
talking about the in-depth look they plan to give
DataRealm Software’s Digital Warehouse.
Digital Warehouse brings to records management all of
the benefits of a highly competitive advanced web application
based on proven MicroSoft SQL database technology. Its
ease-of-use belies a comprehensive product that has the
technical-sophistication to provide accurate audit trails
while automating a range of functions. It is also easy-to-learn
and fast to implement with immediate time and money savings.
With Digital Warehouse there are endless possibilities
to reduce workloads and improve work quality. |

The Kingston,
ON-based Analytical Sciences Group, Department
of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Royal Military
College of Canada has selected Digital Warehouse,
a leading laboratory information management system
(LIMS), to track and maintain records of all physical
test and experiment samples.
On a daily basis the laboratory handles hundreds of physical
samples with each being stored for future reference. The
samples are related to experiments conducted by students
at the College. Laboratory managers were seeking an advanced
computer application able to instantaneously track and
locate any warehoused sample.
Digital Warehouse provides not only such functionality
but also gives the laboratory a means to produce a variety
of reports. Among the key objectives which favored the
selection of the Digital Warehouse electronic tracking
system the College lists time saving, quick data entry
and bar code tracking. Other mandates included ease-of-use,
the ability to collaborate with other laboratories and
automatic invoicing.
Prior to the selection of Digital Warehouse manual spread
sheets or outdated software programs were used for record
keeping. Digital Warehouse represents a new breed of web-based
LIMS. In its development, DataRealm focused on ease-of-use
while creating a system based on today's most advanced
communications and information technologies. |

Information
is at the center of everything an organization
does: strategy management, research and development,
compliance.
How the organization manages that information and its
corporate records can directly affect its
ability to compete, comply with regulations, and recover
from disaster – in other words, to operate efficiently.
Records management is defined as...

Identity
theft was the number-one complaint received by
the Federal Trade Commission in 2008 and accounted
for 26% of all complaints.
Now, in a particularly dangerous twist, medical identity
theft is on the rise with implications for electronic
patient health records and physicians' practices. Anyone
responsible for medical files or medical billing should
know what to look for.
Medical identity theft varies. In one form, the thief
uses another person's name and Social Security number
to obtain emergency medical care under the assumed identity.
Many hospitals are required to provide emergency services
regardless of insurance status. Meanwhile, the real
person is completely unaware of the fraud until he seeks
legitimate medical care or discovers collection notices
on his credit report months or years later.
In another variation, the thief uses stolen insurance
information...

Records and record keeping are inextricably linked with any organized activity.
It is only through the information an organization records in the normal course of business that it can know what it has done and effectively plan what it will do in the future.
As a key resource in the operation of any organization,
records must be created, organized, secured, maintained,
and used in a way that effectively supports the activity
of that organization, including:
Facilitating and sustaining
day-to-day operations
Supporting predictive activities such as budgeting and
planning
Assisting in answering questions about past decisions
and activities
Demonstrating and documenting compliance with applicable
laws, regulations, and standards... Click here to read

The requirement
to track information about samples, properties,
location, activities, status, expiration and more,
is not new. It is a pervasive need for labs that
today have hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands
of samples in their inventory, stored in a variety
of containers in numerous locations.
Reliably tracking these samples as they make their
way throughout the scientific process is difficult yet
absolutely necessary.
Two approaches to sample and storage management (SSM)
LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) solutions
first entered scientific labs more than 40 years ago,
helping to capture, store and analyze the enormous amount
of information that must be tracked and audited. Even
though some LIMS treat sample management as an afterthought,
until recently they remained the best method for tracking
data for large, well-funded labs. However, they were
cost-prohibitive to small and medium-sized labs, which
make up approximately 80 percent of labs around the
world....
